Junior Comprehensive Package

Junior year is the time to dig in to the college selection process.  By the beginning of junior year of high school, most students are beginning to think–at least in the abstract–about what comes after graduation. Junior year is the best time to start identifying priorities, planning courses and high school activities, and developing a list of colleges that closely match the students needs, interests, and aspirations. We guide students through the entire process in a way that is both productive and enjoyable.

We do not have a “cookie-cutter” approach. Nor do we have a list of “selected schools” at which we try to place students. Rather we focus on finding the “best fit” for every individual, and then pursue those goals with confidence, organization, and enthusiasm.

Getting to Know You

  • Review the student’s high school profile, all high school transcripts, projected courses, extracurricular projects and activities, honors, awards and outstanding talents
  • Polish the student’s record to emphasize strengths, successes, and achievements
  • Recommend ways for students to capitalize on their knowledge and experiences
  • Inventory the student’s priorities for the future

Building the College List

  • Discuss the factors that are most important to the student in identifying appropriate colleges
  • Develop priorities for college selection, including courses of study, location, size, extracurricular opportunities, and many other factors
  • Expose students to a wide range of colleges to further hone the list of priorities
  • Ensure that the student’s interests and achievements are carefully matched with appropriate colleges and universities
  • Communicate information regarding special college admission opportunities and unique programs
  • Draft a preliminary list of colleges that match the student’s needs, desires, and aspirations

The Application Process

  • Create the student “brag sheet” or resume, to highlight achievements
  • Consider carefully which teacher or teachers should write letters of recommendation
  • Decide together whether to apply Early Decision or Early Action to a first-choice college
  • Map out a time-line for completion of all applications and supporting materials
  • Manage the entire process to ensure all applications are completed well before the deadlines
  • Review of completed applications prior to submission
  • Evaluate offers of admission and discuss final college selection

College Visits and Tours

  • Suggest college visit itineraries
  • Provide lists of suggested questions to ask admission officers and tour guides
  • Discuss strategies to maximize the amount of information gleaned from your visit
  • Encourage students to schedule a personal interview on each campus
  • Conduct mock interviews

Essays and Personal Statements

  • Brainstorm possible essay topics and develop ideas
  • Suggest ideas for format, structure, and content
  • Continuous feedback on subsequent revisions
  • Encourage students to display their strength of character and express thoughts in their own voice
  • Ensure that all other essay responses on each application is coherent, correct, and presents the student in the best light

Letters of Recommendation

  • Consider which teachers would provide the strongest recommendations
  • Develop strategies about how best to approach teachers to write excellent recommendations
  • Provide resumes and other information to recommenders to help teachers write more effective letters
  • Ensure that the application will contain just the right number of letters–neither too few nor too many

Interviews

  • Share tips about the ins and outs of college admission interviews
  • Provide a list of possible interview questions and prepare answers in advance
  • Develop a list of questions to ask the admission officer
  • Ensure that students feel comfortable and confident as they begin their interviews so that they may make an excellent impression

Specialized Portfolios for Athletes, Artists, Musicians and Others

  • Guidance in the preparation of athletic resumes, artistic portfolios, performance videos, recordings, or other documentation of specialized talents
  • Research entrance requirements and recommendations for additional departmental auditions or interviews
  • Develop strategies for securing letters of recommendation from coaches, directors, mentors, or other sources to shed light on special talents

Learning Differences

  • Review legal issues surrounding learning differences in the transition from secondary to tertiary education
  • Ensure documentation regarding learning differences is up-to-date
  • Discuss the pros and cons of disclosing learning differences on the application
  • Identify schools and services that will best suit the needs and aspirations of the students
  • Offer tips for visiting schools and learning more about specialized services for students with learning differences

Continuous Support

  • Provide answer to ALL questions and concerns throughout the process
  • Communicate regularly by telephone, email, instant messaging, and regularly scheduled meetings
  • Collaborate with families, teachers, and coaches to ensure that the student’s best interests are met
