College Search Simplified Thanks to Great College Advice

Anisha from Hong Kong was like a lot of college applicants: she had a short list in her head of colleges, one of which, she was certain, she would attend. When she started working with Mark Montgomery, educational consultant and college admissions expert, he helped her determine what she wanted out of a university and start applying to schools that were a good fit. Her conversations with Mark sharpened her focus and helped her immensely with her Common Application.

TRANSCRIPT:

Hi, my name is Anisha. I am from Hong Kong. And, yeah, so working with Mark I think going into the college process you have all of these preconceived notions about the process from what other people have told you or what you know. You have already probably done research about the colleges that you want to go to, you have this set idea of what you want, like what’s your first choice. And I think that going through the process is, you can say all this now, now that the journey is done, but I think going through it, having those conversations with Mark, not just about the essays but about what you are looking for in a college and then, at least for me, for my Common App essay, it really forced me — I knew what I wanted to write about, but I think the reason behind writing it I thought I knew but it wasn’t until I had those conversations that I learned more about myself in the process.

And people do say that with the college applications you really — it is like a self-discovery kind of thing in a way, and I do agree with that because looking at my thought process now, I would not have thought this in the beginning. Like my first choice school now was not my first choice school then. And all of this you can really only understand once you go through the process, but I think that, yeah, so he — honestly I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without him. I mean as my parents said, talking to them wouldn’t be the same because anything they say would just go out the other ear.

So having a third party objective to tell you things about yourself that maybe you don’t realize because you, I mean, there are some things that you don’t even realize that you do but other people do. So I think that it really helped and I am happy where I am now. I am really proud of the progress that I have made since the beginning of the year.

Thank you.
