Be wary of online scams!
As a prospective student searching for colleges there will be lots of people trying to get your attention. Be conscious of what you are signing up for, how legitimate a source it is, and what personal information you are sharing.
An article recently posted in the Chronicle discusses an online scam that promised to connect prospective students with admission counselors at public colleges-if they filled out an online form with their information. Unfortunately, the students were then contacted by individuals trying to sway them toward for-profit colleges.
Another place to be wary is when searching for, and applying to, scholarships. You should never have to pay to apply for a scholarship. Scholarships are free money and if you are on a site that is trying to get you to pay for one steer clear! For more information on how to avoid scholarship scams check out finaid.org .
