Alumni networks also have a geographic dimension families overlook. A college with a strong alumni base in the city where a student plans to build a career can be more valuable than a more prestigious school whose alumni are concentrated elsewhere. The connection often matters more than the name on the diploma when it comes to landing that first internship.
Common Mistakes When Evaluating Liberal Arts Colleges
Treating exploration as a lack of direction. Students sometimes pick a professional program to appear decisive when they’re simply still curious. The liberal arts model exists for exactly that curiosity — masking it with a professional major often produces four years of studying something the student doesn’t actually want.
Ignoring graduation and retention rates. These numbers are a proxy for institutional health and student satisfaction. Check both the four-year graduation rate and the first-to-second-year retention rate before committing. It’s also worth checking whether a school empties out on weekends, which can dampen the community experience.
Assuming prestige equals fit. Some of the most prestigious universities are large research institutions where undergraduates get less faculty attention than peers at smaller schools. As Sarah Myers notes, at the most prestigious schools “graduate students may get more of the research opportunities, they may get more of the professor’s time than the undergraduate students would get.” Prestige and academic fit are not the same variable.
