For students who have trouble transitioning from brainstorming to writing, Don Johnston offers an assistive technology called Draft:Builder 6. It breaks down the writing process into three steps: brainstorming, notetaking, and composing the first draft. Because it’s so structured, students can generate and organize ideas more effectively. Not only is the technology easy to use, it features the latest Acapella speech engine, a Franklin Dictionary, the Franklin Talking Spell Checker, and Bibliographer. One really cool feature for teachers is the ability to add locked text to a Draft:Builder assignment to provide additional instruction and help as students create their first draft. Because it addresses difficulties with organization, Draft:Builder is particularly helpful for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Asperger’s, but it’s also great for students who demonstrate poor organization skills, struggle to understand how ideas and concepts are related, or get overwhelmed by the writing process.
