Scholarships for Chinese Students Decline

The Xinhua News Agency of China reports that Chinese students are finding it difficult to get scholarships in the U.S..

The article explains that college endowments have lost money, which means colleges have fewer scholarship dollars to offer foreign students.

In addition, third party agencies that offer scholarships to Chinese students have also been cut back, as those scholarship endowments have declined.

This is why it is so important for Chinese students to choose carefully when applying to colleges and universities in the United States. Some colleges are more willing to to accept–and subsidized–top students from China.

Transferring Colleges, Studying Chinese

During a recent trip to Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, I met a young man from Massachusetts who spoke beautiful Mandarin Chinese. I had lunch with him, and asked him about his educational trajectory.  He mentioned several tantalizing tidbits, including the fact that he had transfered from Boston University to the University of Massachusetts, that his major was in philosophy, and that he had studied Chinese at Fudan University.  He now lives in Beijing, where he works for a prominent educational exchange company.

I asked him if he would share a bit of his educational history on camera, and he agreed.  Here’s a brief clip of our conversation.

Study in the USA from Guangzhou, China

During a recent trip to Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China, I met with hundreds of students and their parents to explain the American higher education system.  I participated in college fairs, presented at education expos, and gave lectures.

As this short video explains, there is a dearth of good information about how to study in the USA, and many misconceptions about what it means to study in the United States.

Have a look!

A Chinese Woman Majors in Accounting at the University of Wyoming

During my recent visit to the University of Wyoming, I met a woman from Suzhou, China, chattering away in Mandarin with a friend.  I had learned that there were significant numbers of international students on the campus.  In fact, my tour guide that day was from Zimbabwe.

But I wanted to learn a bit more about how this woman made her decision to attend the University of Wyoming.  Below she explains.

I was impressed by two points she makes.  First, accounting is accounting is accounting:  it doesn’t really matter all that much where you study accounting, as long as you learn the principles of accounting and are able to use those skills.  So this woman chose her university based more on location, the price, and the general safety of the campus-factors that were most important to her and her family.

Second, this emphasis on price is especially important for international students, who may be unable to apply for financial aid.  So international students often are keenly aware of the value of their education.  The University of Wyoming offers an outstanding value in this respect, as another Wyoming student pointed out to me in an interview.
