US University Admissions Advice in Malaysia

The path toward studying in top universities in the United States from Malaysia is not easy. Historically, most elite families in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Petaling Jaya, and Johore Bahru send their children to the UK for overseas university study. Many secondary schools in Malaysia have less experience helping students to study at top universities in the USA.

There are many education agents and consultants in Malaysia who will help students get into lower-tier universities in the US. However, there are very few top-tier consultants advising top students in Malaysia to get into top universities in the US. These top tier universities would include the Ivy League universities (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown, and University of Pennsylvania). These agents may have relationships with low ranking universities (and are paid by those universities). However, top universities like the University of California, University of Chicago, Stanford, and MIT do not work with agents like this, and agents do not have experience, generally speaking, getting Malaysian students accepted to these schools.

Mark Montgomery – US University Admissions Consultant in Malaysia

Mark Montgomery personally guides students from Malaysia. He travels frequently to Kuala Lumpur to speak with his students and families and to give presentations about how to study in the USA from Malaysia.

Mark received his BA from an Ivy League university (Dartmouth), and he worked as a university instructor at Harvard and as a consultant in international education at Yale. He was a professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and he taught at the University of Denver, where he also became an Associate Dean.

For well over a decade, Dr. Montgomery and his team have been working with talented students from Malaysia and around the world to get them into top universities in the United States. Over the past several years, 97% of his students have been accepted to one of their top three choices. Great College Advice’s students have three to ten times better odds of receiving an offer from an Ivy League university than if they go it alone.

Mark Montgomery would like to help you achieve your dreams to study in the USA from Malaysia.

A Confusing University Admissions Process

The college admissions process at the most selective colleges and universities in the United States is complicated and nuanced. With their school guidance counselors becoming increasingly overwhelmed, many Malaysian secondary school students find themselves without access to the support they need to develop a balanced university list, decide on and plan strategic campus visits, prepare for and practice university interviews, complete all parts of their university applications, write and edit personal statements, figure out how and when to apply for financial aid and scholarships, and get every detail right in other areas of the college application and admissions process.

Is It Possible to Get Into the Ivy League from Malaysia?

Of course! It is possible to get into the Ivy League from Malaysia and from anywhere else in the world. Of course, it is difficult for any student to get accepted to the Ivy League universities.

What do the Ivy League and other top tier universities want from their applicants?

The first thing they want is academic excellence. This is measured by three things:

  • Your performance in secondary school (in other words, your grades or marks in every class you have taken)
  • Your scores on the standardized tests, including the SAT or ACT, SAT2 Subject Tests, and English language proficiency tests (TOEFL, IELTS).
  • Letters of recommendation from your secondary school teachers. These should attest to your academic performance, intellectual engagement, curiosity, classroom involvement, and other school behaviors and attributes.

The above factors are only the beginning, however, when it comes to admission to the Ivy League and other top universities. These top colleges want students that exhibit important characteristics for their future success in life. These include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Curiosity
  • Energy
  • Motivation
  • Leadership abilities
  • Special talents

Guidance for Students Aiming for the Ivy League from Malaysia

Great College Advice can help students develop these subjective characteristics that will increase their chances for admission at top universities. Generally speaking, students must cultivate these characteristics *outside* the classroom and outside their secondary schools.

It is not enough to join clubs or engage in school activities. Students must find ways to contribute their energy to their communities. They must have motivations other than their grades or marks in school. Students must cultivate their curiosity by reading, attending events, and meeting interesting people. They must develop their ability to lead others–both their peers and even adults. Successful applicants to the Ivy League also have special talents to contribute to their university, and to their local and national communities.

Our speciality at Great College Advice is to provide structure and guidance to encourage students to develop these subjective characteristics. This then gives them a better chance of admission at top-tier US universities.
