US University Admissions Advice in Turkey

The path toward studying in top universities in the United States from Turkey is not easy. Historically, most elite families in Istanbul and Ankara have sent their children to the UK for overseas university study.

Most secondary schools in Turkey do not have as much experience helping their students to study at top universities in the USA as they do in helping students into top universities in the UK.

While there are many education agents and consultants who will help students get into lower-tier universities in the US, there are very few top-tier consultants advising top students in Turkey to get into top universities in the US, including the Ivy League (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown, and University of Pennsylvania). These agents may have relationships with low ranking universities (and are paid by those universities). However, top universities like the University of California, University of Chicago, Stanford, and MIT do not work with agents like this, and agents do not have the experience, generally speaking, in getting Turkish students accepted to these schools.

Mark received his BA from an Ivy League university (Dartmouth), and he worked as a university instructor at Harvard and as a consultant in international education at Yale. He was a professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and he taught at the University of Denver, where he also became an Associate Dean.

For well over a decade, Dr. Montgomery and his team have been working with talented students from Turkey and around the world get into top universities in the United States. A Confusing University Admissions Process

It’s no secret that the college admissions process at the most selective colleges and universities in the United States has become more complicated and nuanced. With their guidance counselors becoming increasingly overwhelmed, many Turkish secondary school students find themselves without access to the support they need to develop a balanced university list, decide on and plan strategic campus visits, prepare for and practice university interviews, complete all parts of their university applications, write and edit personal statements, figure out how and when to apply for financial aid and scholarships, and get every detail right in other areas of the college application and admissions process.

Is It Possible to Get Into the Ivy League from Turkey?

Of course! It is possible to get into the Ivy League from Turkey and from anywhere else in the world. Of course, it is difficult for any student to get accepted to the Ivy League universities.

What do the Ivy League and other top tier universities want from their applicants?

The first thing they want is academic excellence. This is measured by three things:

  • Your performance in secondary school (in other words, your grades or marks in every class you have taken)
  • Your scores on the standardized tests, including the SAT or the ACT, the SAT2 Subject Tests, and English language proficiency tests, such as the TOEFL or IELTS exams.
  • Letters of recommendation from your secondary school teachers, attesting to your academic performance, intellectual engagement, curiosity, classroom involvement, and other school behaviors and attributes.

The above factors are only the beginning, however, when it comes to admission to the Ivy League and other top universities. These top colleges want students that exhibit important characteristics for their future success in life. These include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Curiosity
  • Energy
  • Motivation
  • Leadership abilities
  • Special talents

Guidance for Students Aiming for the Ivy League from Turkey

Great College Advice® can help students develop these subjective characteristics that will increase your chances for admission at top universities. Generally speaking, students must cultivate these characteristics *outside* the classroom and outside their secondary schools.

It is not enough to join clubs and be involved in school activities. Students must find ways to contribute their energy in their communities. They must be motivated by things other than their grades or marks in school. Students must cultivate their curiosity by reading, attending events, and meeting interesting people. They must develop their ability to lead others–both their peers and even adults. Successful applicants to the Ivy League also have special talents that they can contribute not only to their university, but to their local, regional, and national communities.

Our specialty at Great College Advice® is to provide structure and guidance to encourage students to develop these subjective characteristics to give them a better chance of admission at top tier US universities.
